The importance of patch testing

Amy Evans

Let me start by apologising to our clients who’ve had to come into the salon for a patch test 48 hours prior to their treatment. Actually! scrap that; I’d much rather apologise for that than for causing them, at best, discomfort or, at worst, blinding them, that’s exactly what could happen without a patch test.

Many of you will be familiar with patch testing and have probably had them in the past. Depending on what treatment you’re having, a small amount of the product is placed in the crook of the elbow or behind the ear at least 48 hours before your appointment. If you get no reaction over the next two days, you’re good to go and enjoy your treatment. If, however, you notice any discomfort, or the area becomes red and irritated, you should remove the product with a cool cotton pad and contact the salon straightaway.

We often hear clients saying they’ve had the same treatment elsewhere and have previously been patch-tested, so they “don’t need another one.” In short: you do. We are obliged to do a patch test as the products we use may be produced by a different manufacturer. And even if you’ve been having a treatment for many years, it is possible for you to become allergic. In fact, the more treatments you have, the more likely it is that you will become allergic. Although this is rare, we’d rather be upfront and honest – at All About Me the client comes first and although you might find a patch test inconvenient at times, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Most governing bodies suggest regular patch testing every six months, so please don’t be offended if we ask you to come back for another one, please don't take it the wrong way - it's a quick and easy process that we do with your best interests at heart.

At All About Me, we take every precaution to ensure your safety and protect our reputation. It’s simply not worth the risk of skipping a patch test. In the worst-case scenario, skipping it could lead to a severe reaction, even something as serious as blindness. When you think about that like that, it makes the idea of a quick test seem like a no-brainer, doesn't it?

Patch testing is there to keep you safe and ensure we deliver the best possible service. It's such a simple step that could save you months of discomfort. So, if we ask you to pop in for a test before your next appointment, just know it's not us being awkward - it's us looking out for you!
