The 3 Biggest Misconceptions About Gel Nails (And What You Really Need to Know)

Gel nails are one of the most requested treatments in salons – yet they’re also one of the most misunderstood.
Over the years, I’ve heard every myth going. So let’s clear a few of them up.
“Gel ruins your natural nails.”
This is probably the biggest misconception of all.
Gel itself does not damage the natural nail. What causes damage is incorrect removal, over-filing, or picking and peeling them off at home (which is very tempting, I know).
When applied and removed properly, gel should protect the natural nail, not destroy it.
“My nails need to breathe between gel sets.”
Nails do not breathe. I’ll say it again: nails do not breathe.
They receive nutrients from the bloodstream, not the air.
If your nails feel thin after gel, it’s usually because they’ve been over-filed, peeled or you’re just not used to them being without gels - not because they’ve been “covered” for too long. I’ve personally worn gel for over 23 years, and my nails are stronger than ever.
Healthy application and safe removal matter far more than taking random breaks.
“Gel is the same everywhere.”
It isn’t!

There’s a huge difference between a quick, cheap appointment and a professional service that includes proper prep, thorough cuticle work, correct curing, genuine products and safe removal advice.
Longevity, nail health and overall finish depend heavily on technique as well as product.
Gel nails are designed to be durable, glossy and low maintenance - but like most treatments, the results depend on how they’re applied and cared for. Often, you get what you pay for.
The key isn’t avoiding gel. It’s understanding it.
When done properly, gel should leave you with strong, healthy nails and a finish that lasts - without fear, myths or damage.
