Let me begin by apologising to all our clients who’ve had to come in to the salon for a patch test 24 hours prior to their treatment. Actually, scrap that; I’d much rather apologise for that than for causing them, at best, discomfort or, at worst, blinding them. Because you see, that’s exactly what could happen without a patch test.
Many of you will be familiar with patch testing, and have probably had them in the past. Depending on what treatment you’re having, a small sample of the product is placed in the crook of the elbow or behind the ear at least 24 hours before your appointment. If you get no reaction over the next day, you’re good to go and enjoy your treatment. If, however you notice any discomfort, or the area becomes red and irritated, you should remove the product with a cool cotton pad and contact the salon straightaway.
Often we hear clients saying they’ve had the same treatment elsewhere and have previously been patch-tested, so they “don’t need another one.” In short: you do. We are obliged to do a patch test as the products we use may be produced by a different manufacturer. And even if you’ve been having a treatment for many years, it is possible for you to become allergic. In fact, the more treatments you have, the more likely it is that you will become allergic. Although this is rare, we’d rather be upfront and honest – at All About Me the client comes first and although you might find a patch test inconvenient at times, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Most governing bodies suggest regular patch testing every six months, so please don’t be offended if we ask you to return for another one; it is a simple and effective procedure that we are doing with our clients’ best interests in mind.
At All About Me, we prefer to take suitable precautions and have the peace of mind that we will maintain our good reputation. It’s not worth our while to take a risk and lose our business because we didn’t carry out a patch test. In a worse case scenario, if you weren’t given a patch test and then experienced a severe reaction to a treatment, you could go blind. When you think about that, it’s a wonder anybody complains about having to have a quick test, isn’t it?!
Patch testing is in place for both the client’s safety and well being and is important for the good name and reputation of our business. It is so simple to do and could save you months of discomfort – so next time we ask you to pop in before your appointment, please don’t think we’re doing it to be awkward; we really are doing it to help you.
