Blackheads are a common problem that can affect all skin types, although they tend to be particularly troublesome for those with oily skin.
A blackhead is formed when sebum or oil becomes trapped in a pore. This blockage becomes hard, oxidises and turns black, hence the not-so-attractive name. Blackheads are not dirt; people sometimes forget that. They're most commonly found on more oily areas of the face including the chin, forehead and sides of the nostrils.
If left, the blackhead will continue to build up until it stretches the pore permanently. This is why areas that have blackheads often have open pores that clog easily and thus produce more blackheads. It’s a pretty vicious circle.
Thankfully, there are steps you can take to help you reduce the number of those pesky blackheads and even banish them forever.
Gently exfoliate your face to ensure there is no dead skin blocking the pores. Note the key word here: ‘gently’. When choosing an exfoliator, pick one that is proven to be gentle; when using it, you shouldn’t feel any beads on your skin, as this will only damage its top layer and will cause the skin to create more oil.
Always remove your makeup. You must ensure that your skincare routine includes full removal of makeup and invest in a good cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin of natural oils.
Never use wipes. It’s no secret that we’re not fans of face wipes – using them will only spread dirt around your face, which won’t help rid you of blackheads!
Always moisturise. Regular moisturising is essential, even if your skin is oily. Oil and moisture are not the same thing and to maintain good skin, you must moisturise, so don’t consider skipping that step in your routine.
Make the effort to increase your vitamin A, which will help to normalise the sebaceous gland, reduce oil production and increase cell production. By applying a vitamin A cream (we recommend the Environ range) or by taking supplements, you guard against blackheads returning.
