How To Be Good To Ageing Skin

We can’t stop skin from getting older; it’s a fact of life and really, we believe you should embrace your age, whatever the number. But skin changes, such as wrinkles and sagging, are visible signs of ageing that we’d rather not see when we look in the mirror. So how can we be good to our ageing skin?

Ageing skin can be caused by a number of different factors, including lifestyle choices, diet, your genes and even the way that you sleep. A main factor in ageing is the environment and free radicals that damage skin cells and lead to wrinkles. Exposure to the sun (mainly UVA rays) and pollution can lead to a loss of collagen, elastin and subcutaneous support (that’s the fatty tissue between the skin and muscle). It’ll come as no surprise to know that smoking can play a huge part in ageing too, as just one puff on a cigarette can release one trillion free radicals!

Signs of ageing include skin becoming rough, more slack, transparent and can bruise more easily. From the age of the 25, collagen and elastin begins to break down and you begin to lose moisture at 30. So it’s a good idea to take care of your skin early-on.

The steps to take to look after your skin

The good news is, it is possible to look after your ageing skin in a few easy steps. First off, prevent greater signs of ageing by drinking plenty of water, enjoy a healthy balanced diet and exercise regularly.

Wearing a daily SPF will also help to prevent any further damage to skin. The ageing ray (UVA) is around all day, every day, whether the sun is out of not so it is important to always wear sun protection 365 days a year, rain or shine.

Make sure you’re getting your vitamins too. Vitamin A will help to lock in moisture, repair the skin and plump to help erase those wrinkles. By combining vitamin A with vitamin C, you will help to stimulate collagen and elastin. Vitamin C can also help to reduce any pigmentation and will brighten your face to give you back a natural glow. Adding vitamin E into your routine will hydrate and heal the skin. Any of our salon staff will be happy to discuss products with you at your next appointment, so don’t forget to ask.

Supplements such as Skin Complete, Collagen Support or Skin Vitality 2 can help to ensure that you are feeding the skin from within to help combat tell-tale signs of ageing. Using products from Environ such as C-Quence Eye Gel and Focus Frown Serum can help to plump out the skin, remove lines and wrinkles and help to put some moisture back into the skin. The range’s AVST 1 is a great moisturiser too, as it contains levels of vitamins A and E that will help to repair the skin and improve collagen and elastin, whilst plumping out the wrinkles.

If you’d prefer to use an evening mask, Environ’s ‘facelift in a bottle’, Revival Masque, is a fantastic place to start. It contains three main acids to help stimulate type I collagen, hydrate and reduce scarring and pigmentation. At All About Me, we also offer a range of facials that can be personalised for you to help with any problem areas specific to you.
